The lack of written records makes it difficult to define the origin of Celtic knot work. The earliest evidence of these designs can be found in the beautifully adorned 7th century Irish manuscripts, such as the Book of Kells and the Book of Durrow.

Today, however, Celtic knots have become a defining characteristic of Irish art. The knots appear to have no beginning and no end. Popular opinion is that these seemingly endless loops are a reflection of the Celtic belief in life’s interconnectedness and continuity.
